QUE PASA 1/24/2024 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

We are now a little more than halfway through our school year.  Today is school day #95 out of 180 days of the school year!

Though we face challenges each day, we can uplift ourselves by realizing our accomplishments.  Each day at school, we remind the students of our Schoolwide Learning Expectations (also known as SLEs), and how we live out our CORE VALUES to Grow, Accomplish, Love, Serve, and Unite.  Even during difficult times, our school community continues to accomplish our goal to meet our SLEs, and at this time–as we are preparing for Catholic Schools Week–I am especially reminded of the following SLEs:

We have the KEYS to:

- GROW by facing challenges with optimism and faith in God.

- ACCOMPLISH by listening and communicating effectively in social and academic environments.

- LOVE by demonstrating an appreciation for what others have done for us.

- SERVE by sharing time, gifts, and joy within the school.

- UNITE by supporting and encouraging others in order to strengthen our school community.

Thank you for all your support so far during this school year!

--Mrs. Sandra Jimenez

P.S. To see the full list of our Schoolwide Learning Expectations, visit our school website at http://www.stpeterssf.org/sles!

Dear Parents,

While we do our best to start 2024 with positivity, we continue to pray for strength as we face the every-day challenges of life.  At times, work, family, and personal demands might keep us from taking time to reflect.  The Prayer of St. Francis can help us to slow down, reflect, and remember the positive impact that we can have on each other as an “instrument of peace.”  As we pray, let us remember that God is always with us through life’s challenges!

Peace Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.  AMEN.

Dear Parents,

Next Monday, we look forward to celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as we have a school holiday in his honor, and as our 8th graders will prepare and lead a prayer service for the school. He is a role model for us and our students as we discuss how others should be treated with dignity and love.  We can reflect on how Dr. King is an example of thinking critically and taking action for social justice.  It’s a perfect opportunity to apply our growth mindset along with the children, and to take action through service and prayer.

Dr. King’s words and service remind me of our school’s core values to Grow, Accomplish, Love, Serve, and Unite; and he can be a model to live out our KEYS:

Knowledge feeds growth.

Every Accomplishment needs courage.

You are love.

Service Unites.

Let us honor Dr. King and start 2024 in a strong way by living out our KEYS and keeping Open Hearts and Open Minds!

DECEMBER STUDENTS OF THE MONTH
Homeroom teachers identify and describe Students of the Month at the end of each month. We all celebrate these students because they have exemplified living the St. Peter’s KEYS:

Knowledge feeds GROWTH.

Every ACCOMPLISHMENT needs courage.

You are LOVE.

SERVICE UNITES.

Congratulations to our December Students of the Month!

Kindergarten - Marcellino Rene Jara shows love by playing with all of his classmates. He embodies the St. Peter’s  KEYS by doing all of his tasks and classroom work, then asking for more and offering to help those who still need it. He also embodies the KEYS by helping to keep the classroom and school yard clean. Give it up for Marcellino!

1st Grade - Carlos Chamul-Lopez has shown a lot of GROWTH in the classroom. He is willing to help without being asked. He has also been working on adding more details to his drawings and writing. Way to go Carlos! You are a superstar!

2nd grade - Destiny Tabora Ortega always treats others with kindness and respect. She works very hard and follows directions so well. She is especially growing as a reader–all of her hard work is paying off!  Way to go, Destiny!

3rd grade - Santino Jara always challenges himself in every school subject. He puts a lot of thought into his work and is always asking the right questions. He is full of fun facts, interesting information and can always bring a smile to someone's face. He comes into class ready to ACCOMPLISH and GROW. We are glad to have you in class, Santino!

4th grade - Frida Garcia has been a star in class and a shining example of a student living out St. Peter School's KEYS. She has grown as a student and has accomplished so much. She was an Honors student during the first grading period and is on her way to earning honors again.  Frida currently serves her school community as this month's Shipping Manager passing out paper, classwork, and homework to her friends in class.  And on top of that, she is a great friend to everyone in class. Keep up the great work Frida! You have earned it.

5th grade - Amariz Araujo-Ortega is our fifth grade student of the month for December!  Over the past month Amariz has grown into a young lady that works hard, persists throughout difficulty, and has found her voice.  She is a leader, athlete, and a hardworking student. Amariz demonstrates the St. Peter's KEYS each day by completing her schoolwork, asking questions, and being a supportive friend in our classroom. Amariz shows our St. Peter's KEYS each day through hard work and dedication. Way to grow, accomplish, love, serve, and unite in fifth grade Amariz!

6th grade - Andrea Morales-Boteo is a diligent student, completing her assignments on time.  She shows strong effort to learn the subjects. She demonstrates excellent behavior inside and outside the classroom.  She is well-mannered and respectful to peers and teachers. Andrea values the KEYS of St. Peter’s School.

7th grade - Ella Jimenez exemplifies the core values of accomplish and unite. Ella is respectful to her peers and classmates. She demonstrates meticulousness in her work, approaching everything with thoughtfulness and diligence. She is someone her classmates admire, trust, and can lean on for help.

8th grade - Andrea Perez has demonstrated what it means to serve, by sharing her time, gifts, and joy within our school community as a leader, Student Council officer, classmate, and friend. Her enthusiasm and willingness to accomplish tasks solidifies her ability to work hard with a positive attitude. Andrea has proven that she knows how to live out the St. Peter’s KEYS! Keep up the good work!

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY

This weekend—January 6—we celebrate The Feast of Epiphany, which commemorates the Magi bearing gifts, who followed a star to find the baby Jesus. It reminds us that we should be looking for God, and finding Him, all along the way!  In honor of the Feast of the Epiphany, we pray that all will be treated with dignity and love, and that those who come there will find, as did the magi on their journey, Jesus Christ.

For the Feast of the Epiphany, there will be a special celebration for children and parents on Saturday, January 6 at 10:00 AM at St. Peter’s Church.  Please scroll down for the flier of information.

Dear Parents,

We’ve made it to Christmas vacation! We continue to reflect during this Advent season and pray for strength as the year comes to a conclusion, and as we enter a new year with hope, remembering that “Jesus is the reason for the season!”

I share this prayer (written by Christine Sine) with you all:

The coming of our Lord is near,

And we wait in joyful expectation.

Draw close, Lord Jesus Christ,

Shed your light on all that is filled with darkness.

The coming of our Lord is near,

And we wait with hope filled hearts.

Draw close, God’s beloved son,

Teach us the wonder of your all-embracing love.  AMEN.

During this Advent and Christmas, I keep the entire St. Peter’s School family in my prayers--I am grateful to be a part of this loving community. I pray that everyone has a safe and restful winter break.  Have a joyous Christmas and a happy new year!  Best wishes for 2024!

Dear Parents,

This week and next, we celebrate two feasts of Mary: the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  It’s very appropriate that we celebrate Mary during the season of Advent as we prepare for the coming of Jesus, because without Mary, and without her faith, strength, and love, we wouldn’t have Jesus.  And after all, Jesus is the reason for the season!

Pope Francis wrote an Advent reflection a few years ago that reminds us of how Mary is a role model for us today.  Mary is our sign of FAITH and HOPE.  As Pope Francis describes, Mary is a loving mother who inspires us all to put God first in our lives.  Here’s a part of what Pope Francis wrote:

“We bet on hope, on the hope of peace, and it will be possible! The journey is never finished. Just as in each of our own lives, there is always a need to restart and to rise again.Mary is a model of this spiritual attitude, to this way of being and of journeying in life.Although she was just a simple girl, she carried in her heart the hope of God.  In her womb, the hope of God took flesh, became man, and made history: Jesus Christ.  Let us be guided by her, she who is mother, she is a ‘mama’ and knows how to lead us. Let us be guided by her in this time of waiting.”

So let’s remember Mary, during Advent and every day, and how she is a role model for us to have courage, to put God first in our lives, and to have open hearts and open minds.  And when we do that, GREAT things can happen!

–Mrs. Sandra Jimenez

Dear Parents,

December is just around the corner!  Even though we’re near the end of the year, we find ourselves just at the beginning of a Church season—ADVENT.  Advent is a time of preparation for Jesus’ birth.

The teachers and I will be teaching the students about Advent, and how our preparations could include special acts—such as saying extra prayers, reading the bible, giving to the school’s weekly Missions collection, or doing extra good deeds—because doing those special acts will make more room in our hearts for Jesus.  Some classes are following an Advent calendar or constructing Advent wreaths, yet some classes might also be planning special projects to help those in need.  Students that have received the sacrament of Reconciliation will also have the opportunity to receive Reconciliation with their class during December. Whatever your child and your family do during Advent, remember that Jesus is the reason for the season.  The children have heard this at school, but continue this lesson at home.  Let’s all be examples of open hearts and open minds, and know that we wouldn’t be celebrating if it wasn’t for our savior, Jesus Christ.

Let us offer this prayer  as we begin this season of Advent:

Jesus,

You are light even in the darkest places.  Help us to trust in you when we are lost or lonely.  Shine hope and love into our hearts.

AMEN.

Dear Parents,

As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, I want to say Thank You for being part of the St. Peter’s School family!  I am proud to be part of our community as we continue to teach our children to live out and celebrate our core values to grow, accomplish, love, serve, and unite.

While we are thankful for all our blessings—like our families, our friends, and our homes, to name a few—let us also remember to pray for those who are in need and who are facing particularly difficult challenges during this holiday time.  Together, let us offer this prayer (written by “Anonymous”):

 O Heavenly Father:

We thank You for food and remember the hungry.

We thank You for health and remember the sick.

We thank You for friends and remember the friendless.

We thank You for freedom and remember the enslaved.

May these remembrances stir us to service,

That Your gifts to us may be used for others.  AMEN.

During this holiday season, let us not forget that we will soon be entering into a new church–or liturgical–season… the season of ADVENT!  As this liturgical season approaches, begin thinking of ways that you and your child can prepare your hearts for the coming of Jesus at Christmas time!

Have a blessed, happy Thanksgiving!

Lord God, Almighty Father, creator of mankind and author of peace, as we are ever mindful of the cost paid for the liberty we possess,we ask you to bless our government officials and the members of our armed forces.  Give them courage, hope and strength.  May they ever experience your firm support, gentle love and compassionate healing.  Be their power and protector, leading them from darkness to light.  To you be all glory, honor and praise, now and forever.  Amen.

Dear Parents,

This week, we celebrate special days in the Church: today–All Saints’ Day, and tomorrow–All Souls’ Day (Dia de los Muertos). On the Feast of All Saints, a holy day of obligation, we honor those who have lived lives faithful to God. On the Feast of All Souls, we remember and pray for our loved ones who have passed away, and honor them through prayer, or even by making ofrendas in their memory.

As we honor the Saints, let us remember how they lived out the Beatitudes—Jesus’ teachings on how to live as a Christian and to find true happiness.  The Beatitudes can help us to reflect on how to be role models for our children.  We can lead our children by example and live out our faith, showing kindness, love, and respect!

      The Beatitudes  (Matthew 5:3-10)

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

OCTOBER STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

Homeroom teachers identify and describe Students of the Month at the end of each month. We all celebrate these students because they have exemplified living the St. Peter’s KEYS:

Knowledge feeds GROWTH.

Every ACCOMPLISHMENT needs courage.

You are LOVE.

SERVICE UNITES.

Congratulations to our October Students of the Month!

Kindergarten - Victoria Jamaica-Rocha comes to school ready to learn. She finishes tasks and asks to help others who are still working. She reminds people to pay attention to the teacher. She plays with all of her classmates and loves our dance breaks. Her energy and passion for learning are infectious. When she starts a new task or project she has to finish it. Her love of learning is wonderful to see every day. She grows when she learns new things, accomplishes tasks every day, loves her classmates, unites the whole class at circle time, and serves her classroom community by being helpful.

1st Grade - Enoch Araujo Ortega does his best everyday. He lives out the St. Peter's core values of LOVE and ACCOMPLISH. He comes to school focused and always puts his best effort into his school work. Way to go, Enoch! Thank you for being an example of a superstar classmate!

2nd Grade - Carlos Cortez always has a positive attitude and gets along with everyone. He does his best on his work and is especially great at classroom discussions. He will often volunteer to help out on his own and is great at taking responsibility. Great job, Carlos!

3rd Grade - Miriam Rivera shows a lot of leadership in the classroom. She always participates in classroom discussion and she is very proud and willing to share all the work she does. She has also been a great help to the teacher and her classmates, cheering them on in their accomplishments. She comes into class ready to UNITE and ACCOMPLISH. We are glad to have you in class, Miriam!

4th Grade - Erick Maradiaga Hernandez has been a star and a shining example of a student living out St. Peter's School's KEYS. Along with showing growth academically in the classroom, Erick has been someone who takes action, serving his school community. He is often found, at the end of recess, keeping the school yard clean by picking up additional items left behind. He also volunteers to help with keeping the classroom clean after lunch. He has shown himself to be a solid student, a true leader, and a great friend. Keep up the great work, Erick!

5th Grade - Damian Caldera has demonstrated so much growth over these first two months of school. Damian has been working towards his learning goals and is achieving them! He has been demonstrating our St. Peter's KEYS each day by completing his schoolwork, improving on his learning goals, and being a good friend. Way to grow, serve, love, and unite in fifth grade, Damian!

6th Grade - Angel Robledo is a great example of a student who really lives out the core values of St. Peter’s School. He respects his classmates and teachers, organizes his things, participates in class, and works hard academically. And for these reasons, Angel is the 6th grade student of the month!

7th grade - Christian Pineda has shown academic growth and has gotten out of his comfort zone to advocate for his learning. He embodies the school core values of grow and accomplish. He is kindhearted and treats all his classmates and teachers with respect. He is an example to follow. Great job, Christian!

8th grade - Angelo Moctezuma Bocanegra demonstrates growth and love by striving to better himself, both in and outside the classroom. He constantly lends a helping hand to those around him, his peers, teachers, and staff, not because he has to, but because he genuinely wants to. Angelo is also embracing new experiences with an open heart and open mind, by tackling his 8th grade year with enthusiasm and confidence. Way to go, Angelo! Keep up the great work!

Dear Parents,

As we conclude this month of the Rosary, we can reflect on the different events in Mary’s and Jesus’ lives. These reflections, connections, and prayers can fill us with joy and thanksgiving, and also give us strength during hard times.

While October comes to a close and we enter into a new month, let us offer this prayer together (adapted from a prayer on gatherandgrow.com) as we continue learning and living out our core values to Grow, Accomplish, Love, Serve, and Unite!

Dear God,

Thank you for the gift of education in every form.  As we prepare for our learning, may confidence be our foundation, may grace be our guide, and may hope be our compass toward a brighter future. We pray that we have eyes to see the needs of those around us and a heart to love well.  May we face each day with positivity knowing that no matter what comes our way, we do not have to face it alone.

We are confident that through You, our loving Father, your care for us will never change.  May we show the same love and care for one another in all we say and do at school, at home, and in our community.  AMEN.

Dear Parents,

Our Parent-Teacher Zoom Conferences begin today!  Teachers will be sharing each student’s Progress Report for Trimester 1 and   parents can learn about their children’s progress and ask teachers questions.  Conferences are an important part of the school-home partnership, which helps to support students’ academic, social, emotional, and spiritual growth and learning.

During this time of Parent-Teacher Conferences, let us offer this prayer together:

Dear God,

Thank you for the gift of our children. Help us to set boundaries for them, and yet encourage them to explore. Give us the strength and courage to treat each day as a fresh start. May our children come to know you, the one true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.  May your Holy Spirit help them to grow in faith, hope, and love, so they may know peace, truth, and goodness.  May their ears hear your voice.  May their eyes see your presence in all things.  May their lips proclaim your word.  May their hearts be your dwelling place.  May their hands do works of charity.  May their feet walk in the way of Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord. AMEN.

Dear Parents,

This past Monday was our observance of Indigenous People’s Day—a holiday that celebrates Native Americans and commemorates their histories and cultures.  It is a reminder to continue to work towards social justice so that people of all cultures are treated with kindness, dignity, and compassion.  Here at school, as described in our Schoolwide Learning Expectations (SLEs), we strive towards social justice with our core values—

to GROW by embracing new experiences with an open heart and open mind;

to ACCOMPLISH by thinking critically;

to LOVE by making choices based on the teachings of Jesus Christ;

to SERVE by living out the corporal and spiritual Works of Mercy;

to UNITE by welcoming people of all backgrounds as St. Peter’s community members.

In honor of Indigenous People’s Day, here is an excerpt of a prayer from the United Church:

O God, for the witness of strength, caring, and love of Indigenous peoples, and for the struggle for what is just and right, open our hearts this day. Encourage us to listen more, speak less, participate in the movements for change that will bring us together in good and respectful ways. Encourage us to make friends, get to know someone’s story, and share our stories too, without fear, for in Christ we know we are all kin, relatives, with you and with each other and with all living and non-living things.

Dear Parents,

This Saturday—October 7th—commemorates the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, and (as we pray the Hail Mary as a school each morning) the month of October is traditionally the month of the Rosary.

Here is a thoughtful reflection from Living the Rosary by Father John Phalen:

The Rosary starts with Mary’s human experience, and it encourages us to learn from our own.  The Rosary is:

  • Remembering Christ with Mary

  • Learning Christ with Mary

  • Being conformed to Christ with Mary

  • Praying to Christ with Mary

  • Proclaiming Christ with Mary

By looking to Mary, the courageous mother of our Savior, we can open our hearts and minds to God’s presence in our lives, and be models for our own children to live with love, patience, faith, and perseverance, even through the challenging times in our lives.

When I pass by our grotto at school each day, I’m reminded of how much St. Peter’s students honor Mary, and I think about how they make the Sign of the Cross or stop to say a prayer at the grotto.  It’s definitely a sacred place for our entire school family.  Plus, each month, one class has the task of taking care of the grotto, by bringing flowers and even prayer cards to Mary!

Throughout October, let us look to Mary as a role model of faith and courage, especially during this month of the Rosary!

--Mrs. Sandra Jimenez

As we approach the conclusion of the first month of school, I am reminded of our KEY “Knowledge feeds GROWTH.”  This was a time when we adjusted to a new classroom, got to know teachers and classmates, and learned how to collaborate with others.  Think about how your child has grown so far (academically, socially, and spiritually) since the first day of school.  The knowledge they have gained will help to feed their mind and spirit, but they should not stop there.  We’ve only just begun!  Together, let us guide them to use that knowledge to take action to better themselves, to positively guide others, and to improve their communities.   And when they take action, they can understand that “Every ACCOMPLISHMENT needs courage”—another one of our KEYS! Together, let’s keep our growth mindset going strong as this first month of school draws to a close.

QUE PASA 9/20/2023 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

This Sunday, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy, or as we lovingly call it, Mercy Day! We remember our Sisters of Mercy, who founded our beloved St. Peter’s School and continue to care for and support our students, teachers, and families to this day.

We are grateful for Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy; and for Mother Baptist Russell, who traveled from Ireland and established schools and hospitals in America.  We are grateful for the loving contributions of our Sisters of Mercy today—including Sister Lucy, Sister Pauline, Sister Paulina, and Sister Toni Lynn—all who help to guide us at St. Peter’s School.  The sisters of Mercy are living examples to us for living out the mission of Mercy.  This year, we also pay special tribute to Sister Marian Rose, who went home to God over the summer.  We remember her selfless love and dedication to St. Peter’s School for over 40 years!

And what is mercy?  MERCY means to show love and compassion towards others; to forgive others and to be grateful to be forgiven by others; to show charity and generosity, especially to those in need; to have the courage to stand up for what’s right, especially for others who are afraid to stand up for themselves; to have faith in God.  MERCY means having an open heart and open mind.

Let’s remember to be thankful for all the good works of the Sisters of Mercy, keep them in our prayers, and try our best to live out the mission of Mercy ourselves, not only at St. Peter’s School, but everywhere!

--Mrs. Sandra Jimenez

QUE PASA 9/13/2023 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

Yesterday, celebrating our first Mass of the school year led me to reflect on the Sacraments and the meaning they have in our lives. I thought about the significance of the Sacrament of the Eucharist, and I was drawn to re-read an article found on www.usccb.org (by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops).  I share part of that here:

We recognize that the Sacraments have a visible and invisible reality, a reality open to all the human senses but grasped in its God-given depths with the eyes of faith. … The visible reality we see in the Sacraments is their outward expression, the form they take, and the way in which they are administered and received. The invisible reality we cannot "see" is God's grace, his gracious initiative in redeeming us through the death and Resurrection of his Son. His initiative is called grace because it is the free and loving gift by which he offers people a share in his life, and shows us his favor and will for our salvation. Our response to the grace of God's initiative is itself a grace or gift from God by which we can imitate Christ in our daily lives.

The saving words and deeds of Jesus Christ are the foundation of what he would communicate in the Sacraments through the ministers of the Church.  Guided by the Holy Spirit, the Church recognizes the existence of Seven Sacraments instituted by the Lord. Through the Sacraments, God shares his holiness with us so that we, in turn, can make the world holier.

As a family, I encourage you to live out the faith by attending Sunday Mass and joining us at school Mass when possible, and witness the grace of God in receiving the Sacraments!

QUE PASA 9/6/2023 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

Earlier this week, we celebrated the Labor Day Holiday, a day when we honor and recognize the American labor movement and the hard work and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States.  And yesterday, was another special day–the Feast day of Saint Mother Theresa of Calcutta.  Saint Mother Theresa visited our school once many years ago, and she was someone who worked very hard to help those who were in great need and who were often overlooked and forgotten in different parts of the world..

We can all look towards Saint Mother Theresa as a hard-working, compassionate  role model who lived out our KEYS–especially “You are LOVE” and “SERVICE UNITES.”  Saint Mother Theresa showed us how we can serve others in  unity with faith, and what a great impact we can have even with small acts of love.  We can be positive, active examples to listen to other perspectives, act with kindness, and work towards justice. We want St. Peter’s School to be a safe place for students to grow and learn, where they can accomplish their goals with open hearts and open minds.  Let us continue our partnership as we reach for this goal, and continue our prayers for peace throughout our communities.

--Mrs. Sandra Jimenez

STAR ASSESSMENTS

This week and next is Window #1 for STAR Testing.  Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade take a test in Early Literacy, while students in grades 2-8 take tests in Reading and Math.

A STAR assessment is one data point that helps teachers know how they can best help students. It will not be part of the students’ grade, yet it will help teachers determine areas where students may need extra help or where students need to be further challenged.  Results of STAR assessments will be discussed at the first round of Parent-Teacher conferences in October.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT

Back-to-School Night is coming up next week on Wednesday, September 13, beginning at 5:30 PM in the church.  Following the meeting in the church, parents may visit classrooms for a general grade-level information meeting with teachers.

SCHOOL MASS

Our first school Mass is next week on Tuesday, September 12 at 8:15 AM.  Moving forward, we will be attending Mass weekly on Tuesdays at 8:15 AM.  An announcement will be made on Class Dojo if Mass will be on a different day during a particular week.

Parents and other family members are welcome to join us during our school Masses.  You may find a seat in an empty pew behind the students.  We look forward to celebrating the Eucharist as a school community!
