QUE PASA 2/5/2020 (English)

Dear Parents,

February is already upon us!  Since Valentine’s Day is in February, I often associate the month of February with one of our school’s core values—LOVE.  February is also the month of the Holy Family, a family that we could look towards as an example of unconditional love.  Below is a prayer the we can offer together, to remind us of our love for our family, and to remind us that we are a school family working together to help our children open their hearts and minds.  As stated in our school philosophy: We are a family--somos una familia--with parents, students and educators working together.

JESUS, Son of God and Son of Mary, bless our family. Graciously inspire in us the unity, peace, and mutual love that you found in your own family in the little town of Nazareth.

MARY, Mother of Jesus and Our Mother, nourish our family with your faith and your love. Keep us close to your Son, Jesus, in all our sorrows and joys.

JOSEPH, Foster-father to Jesus, guardian and spouse of Mary, keep our family safe from harm. Help us in all times of discouragement or anxiety.

HOLY FAMILY OF NAZARETH, make our family one with you. Help us to be instruments of peace. Grant that love, strengthened by grace, may prove mightier than all the weaknesses and trials through which our families sometimes pass. May we always have God at the center of our hearts and homes until we are all one family, happy and at peace in our true home with you.   AMEN.

IN THE CLASSROOM

KINDER - It was heartbreaking to see the Forty-Niners come short of a victory! But I know we are all proud of the hard work it took for them to get there! Let's use this as a learning opportunity to always aim high and work hard! That's what really matters, especially in Kindergarten!

1A - This week we are reading, writing, and learning about how animals' bodies help them. We are also working on the long a sound with the a, ai, and ay spellings. In religion, we are making our prayer books and celebrating all the prayers we have learned so far. In math, we are continuing our work on subtraction.

2A – We will be finishing up My Cousin Primo! 2nd graders are such good reading detectives, noticing the similarities and differences between the boys in the story! We are going to continue working on modeling numbers within 1,000 using drawing, and using waffles/french fries/tater tots to do this. We're going to focus on all the families we belong to (such as at home, school, sports, and BVCC).

3A – This week, we will finish reading Stone Fox and watch the movie. After both the book and the movie, we will have an assessment, journal reflection, and comparison of the book and the movie. In Religion, we will practice our Mass responses, attend Mass, and read, discuss and use our Gospel booklet to prepare for Sunday's Mass. 3A will begin a cursive writing text called Writing Our Catholic Faith.

4A - This week, we will continue our focus on the Sacraments, moving to Reconciliation and Holy Orders. In Reading, we will continue our novel study of Frindle. We are focusing on the skill of summarizing, building in our paragraph writing skills. We will also focus on expanding our vocabulary through dictionary skills and identifying character traits. In Math, we will continue our multiplication unit through area and perimeter then transition to double-digit word problems. In Science, we will be focusing on volcanoes as a form of weathering. In Social Studies, we will continue to learn about the Missions and the mission life of California Native peoples.

5A - This week, 5th graders will be starting research for their "spiritual hero" biography project in religion. Feel free to share any ideas for "spiritual heroes" with your child during this brainstorming stage. In math, we'll be working on dividing with decimals. See Class Dojo for more updates!

6A  Religion – Students are beginning a Growing in Love Bible Verse Project.   Language Arts – 6th grade is at the climax of our novel Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, and we will soon find out if the Logans will achieve the justice they're fighting for. We'll continue to analyze the theme, using textual evidence to support our arguments.   Math - Students are dividing complex fractions and adding and subtracting decimals.   Social Studies – Students will continue with the physical geography of China and will begin an Ancient Empire Research Project.   Science – Scientists will be reflecting on the importance of the movie Hidden Figures and Black History Month in relation to science and society. They will also learn the reasons why we are called the Water Planet.

8A   Religion - Students will gain knowledge about the Crusades and previous notions of salvation. They will also use this as a platform to view injustices in the world today.   Language Arts - The students are continuing to exercise their creativity as they progress in their Poetry Unit.
