Teachers
Ms. ANNA GURLEYEN
Homeroom Teacher
Ms. Gurleyen grew up in the desert outside Los Angeles, but is a long-time resident of the Mission District and loves living and working in her community. She holds a MA in English Language Learner Education from Western Governors University and values creating a classroom in which all learners can thrive.
Volunteering in AmeriCorps was how Ms. Gurleyen discovered her love of being an educator. She did lots of other cool things before deciding to become a classroom teacher (such as working at a salmon cannery in Alaska). She taught 3 years of 2nd grade before arriving at St. Peter’s. Her favorite part of teaching 2nd-graders is how creative, enthusiastic, and energetic they are.
When not in school, Ms. Gurleyen enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with her family.
First Grade Activities & Field Trips
Language Arts Rotations
First graders participate in small group Station Rotations to practice literacy skills and build confidence as readers.
end of year mass
Students get to help conclude the school year by planning and leading the End of Year Mass. Students are responisble for all elements of the mass, and it is a wonderful opportunity for them to showcase their literacy and leadership skills.
science investigations
We take an authentic, hands-on approach to science, and the students participate in experiements and become real scientists.
Second Grade Activities & Field Trips
First Communion and Reconciliation
Students who desire to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist prepare for these by reading Bible stories, completing Blest are We workbook activities and visiting St. Peter’s Church. They learn about the Catholic sacraments and traditions as well as basic teachings of the Church.
Becoming Independent Readers
Students are exposed to a wide variety of genres, texts and materials to get them excited about reading. We visit the school library to check out books weekly and students can also choose and read books from our own classroom library.
Math Centers
Students participate in centers for a variety of subjects to reinforce concepts they are learning. This is a fun way to learn adding and subtracting, geometric shapes, telling time, money, measurement, multiplication, grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary words and more.
